In 2020, I had the extraordinary opportunity to design and install a series of murals at Google's Mountain View campus. This project was particularly unique and exciting due to its incorporation of living plants and moss within the mural design, reflecting Google's commitment to sustainability and the natural beauty of Northern California.
The Vision
Google wanted the murals to create a strong connection to the landscape and environment of Northern California, fostering a sense of harmony and tranquility within their workspace. The idea was to blend art with nature, creating installations that would not only be visually striking but also bring a touch of the outdoors inside.
The Creative Process
The creative process began with extensive research and planning. I aimed to design murals that would seamlessly integrate living elements with traditional painting techniques. The centerpiece of the project was a large mural in a spacious room, where I incorporated living plants and moss to create a dynamic, evolving piece of art.
This mural was designed to change over time as the plants grew and evolved, adding a living, breathing element to the artwork. The integration of these natural elements required careful selection of plant species that would thrive indoors and detailed planning to ensure proper maintenance and care.
In addition to the main mural, two other murals were created to wrap through hallways in different areas of the building. These murals continued the natural theme, using vibrant colors and abstract forms to evoke the landscapes of Northern California. The aim was to create a cohesive visual experience that connected different parts of the building.
Execution and Challenges
The installation process presented several unique challenges. Integrating living plants into a mural required precise planning and coordination with horticultural experts to ensure that the plants would thrive. The logistics of installing such a large and complex mural also required meticulous organization and collaboration with the Google facilities team.
Despite these challenges, the project was executed smoothly, thanks to the collaborative efforts of everyone involved. The result was a series of murals that not only enhanced the visual appeal of the Google campus but also brought a touch of nature indoors, creating a more serene and inspiring environment for employees and visitors.
The Impact
The completed murals have been well-received by the Google community, providing a unique blend of art and nature that enhances the overall atmosphere of the campus. The living plant mural, in particular, has become a focal point, sparking conversations about sustainability and the importance of connecting with nature.
Reflecting on this project, I am proud of the creative and technical achievements it represents. It was an opportunity to push the boundaries of traditional mural art, integrating living elements to create a truly unique and impactful installation.
