In 2018, I had the distinct honor of being commissioned to create a monumental mural for Atlassian's new headquarters in downtown San Francisco by the incredible art consultants and friends, Building 180. This dynamic piece spans three floors of an open atrium, serving as a central focal point in the grand entrance lobby of their high-rise office. The project not only allowed me to showcase my artistic vision but also to collaborate with the talented sister artist duo, Knits for Life, known for their innovative work with yarn and string.
The Vision
Atlassian, a company renowned for its innovative spirit and collaborative ethos, sought a mural that would embody these values and enhance their workspace. The goal was to create an art installation that would inspire and engage employees and visitors alike, transforming the office environment into a vibrant and dynamic space.
The Creative Process
The mural project began with a collaborative design phase. We aimed to capture the essence of Atlassian's brand through bold colors and abstract forms. The mural needed to reflect the energy and creativity that drive the company’s success.
Once the design was finalized, the execution phase began. I painted the massive three-floor mural, integrating dimensional wood panels throughout the artwork. These panels added depth and texture, creating a more immersive experience for viewers. Knits for Life then enhanced these segments by stretching string in intricate and beautiful patterns, further elevating the dimensional aspects of the mural.
The Execution
Executing a project of this scale in a bustling high-rise presented unique challenges and opportunities. The logistics of painting a mural across three floors required meticulous planning and coordination. The high ceilings and expansive surfaces necessitated the use of scaffolding and specialized equipment to ensure precision and safety.
